• Summarize your general beliefs of what makes a good leader.
• Regarding the transformational leadership skills discussed in our required article reading. How do you think your leadership style is perceived by others?
• What aspect of the TEACH values discussed in the lesson do you think would most benefit your work environment if adopted?
Answer
Hello Professor and Class,
An effective and good leader should exemplify key attributes these should include, respect for those that work for them, knowledge in all areas of the nursing role, integrity, creates inspiration in those they work with, ability to adapt, and learns from their peers.
As a relief charge nurse in my current role has granted me the ability to be on both sides of the fence now. While not every day can be easy, I try to always adhere to my beliefs of what an effective leader should exemplify. The transformational leadership style is based around motivating staff through multiple means to achieve a mutual idea (Frandsen, 2014). I believe I act in a transformational leader style because I try to always encourage my staff to be self-sufficient and work as a unit with minimum management from myself but rather support and assistants. My goal is for my unit to run with minimal input from myself, they know what our goals are and what my expectations are, this way when I am occupied with other situations they can continue to work rather than waiting for guidance.
Our lesson states that the TEACH values are, Teamwork, Energy, Accountability, Community, and Heart (Week 6: Lesson, 2020).
While all aspects of TEACH can be beneficial in all aspects of healthcare, teamwork, energy, and accountability stand out to me as paramount in the ER.
Teamwork is important because we have to work together to achieve our throughput goals and in trauma/code situations working as a team is vital.
Energy comes into play because working 12 hours in a fast paced ER can be taxing, utilizing available resources and coping mechanisms, and help from teammates is vital to personal health and professional longevity.
Accountability is at the top of the tree, we must be accountable, trusted, and have integrity at all times working in the ER. I have the ability to put orders in for the physician, and override meds without orders, if accountability and integrity is not maintained then we lose the trust of our physicians and patients and can potentially cause undue harm to those we aim to help.
Tiff,
