NR 451 Week 3 Graded Discussion Topic: Resilience and Change
This week’s graded topic relates to the following Course Outcome (CO).
CO4: Integrates clinical nursing judgment using effective communication strategies with patients, colleagues, and other healthcare providers. (PO#4)
Change is part of our daily healthcare environment. Clinical nursing judgements based on quality and safety, as well as protocols and standards, reflect our patient-centered care values.
• What steps could you take to develop more resilience in your practice setting?
• How might you communicate a change in practice to patients and nursing peers?
Answer
Hello Professor and Class,
The definition of resilience as said by (Kester, 2018) is the ability to face an adverse situation, remain focused, and maintain optimism for the future. This is a perfect statement to summarise what as nurses we all must achieve no matter how dire the situation. Steps that could be taken in my practice setting to achieve more resilience would be to make stronger bonds among pears, leading to increased communication and strength as a group which leads to the ability to maintain optimism for the future. The (ANA, 2015) states that a healthy work environment is needed to support overall job satisfaction and personal well being.
Effective evidence based change is a necessary component to healthcare as a whole and to nurses specifically, without change we would cease to give the best care possible and increase the chance of life in life saving scenarios. The required reading this week (Resilience and change, 2020) tells us that we can benefit from flexibility and patience when dealing with a change. To communicate a change with pears I would try to notify them as soon as possible to give time for feedback regarding said change, create handouts describing what the change is, how it affects current practices, and how it will be implemented. If the change affects patients in a way that would best be communicated first then the same approach to a handout being given describing the change, the purpose, how it might affect them, and who they can contact regarding any additional questions or feedback.
Tiff,
