Next watch the video by clicking on the link below Civility in the Workplace
Reflect on what you observed in the video as you answer the following:
Based on what you observed, what leadership skills should you, as Masaya’s preceptor, model for your fellow coworkers to promote his acceptance into the work-group or team.
1. Does incivility seem to be an issue in the scenario?
2. Describe any common themes you discovered among the article, the video and the Civility Index
3. Share how you may improve your score on the index based on what you have read.
As Messiah’s preceptor the leadership skills I would model motivation, honesty, advice positivity, effective communication and a great listener or my fellow coworkers to promote his acceptance into the work-group. Diversity and inclusion is the combination of different cultures, ideas, and perspectives that brings forth greater collaboration, creativity, and innovation, which leads to better patient care and satisfaction (Bettencourt, 2016). As Messiah’s preceptor I would encourage the caregivers to be open and learn about him and his culture. I would encourage open-mindedness which will allow insight into a different culture that will allow him to feel welcome and that he is part of the team.
In this scenario civilization does seem to be an issue. Incivility, bullying, and horizontal/lateral violence are examples of workplace mistreatment that injure individual nurses and the ethical
climate of the organization (Lachman, 2015). His coworkers rolled their eyes when he uses the patient’s surnames and has treating him wrongfully because he does things differently. The common theme I discovered was that in order for a team to work collaboratively in order to provide safe quality of care they must respect each other’s differences.
I received a score of 75 the Clark Workplace Civility Index Assessment, there is always room for improvement for everything that we do. The two areas I need to work on are speaking directly to the person with whom I have an issue. Demonstrating approachability, flexibility, and openness to other points of view. I tend to do that because I always do my best to avoid conflict, but I realize that it is best to resolve a problem right away instead of letting it get out of control.
