Hello Professor and Class!
Emily is the nurse I chose to interview for my class paper. I know her from my community in which I leave and happen to work in the same organization as her but different hospitals. In the 2010 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Institute of Medicine report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, there are four key messages listed aimed at helping nurses transform healthcare (Chamberlain Lesson, 2017). The message that stands out to me which I think Emily resonates with is “Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression” (CCN week 7 lesson, 2017). She has not really written any policies but has fought for nurses throughout the organization by fighting for tuition reimbursement increment for employees from $2500-$5000. Her aim is to get many nurses get their education and make a difference in the community. She also came up with the idea of making aspiration precaution one of the competencies for all nursing staff. She is someone I could definitely emulate in my nursing career. I learned from her that you can make your voice heard in an organization if you put forth an agenda and actively participate in committees which can help push forward that agenda.
I am currently a member of the employee advisory committee were I take the concerns from the staff directly to the president for the hospital and vice versa. Although the employees don’t think their suggestions matters, I always encourage them to keep voicing their concerns especially through employee engagement surveys they take twice a year. According to Judd “RNs have the ability to unite more than one voice to transform the nursing profession and patient care in a positive manner” (Judd, 2014). As I further my education in my nursing career I hope to be a positive influence amongst to others in the nearest future.
