When comparing the PubMed and Google Scholar databases, I found several articles related to my topic Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), I found that it was easier to find versus narrowing them down. When I used the PubMed database, there were several different articles about IBS that I could have used, but all written by authors within PubMed. When using Google Scholar, there were a lot more articles that were published by different journals which made it harder to narrow it down.
Explain how you were able to narrow down the number of article hits you had initially.
When it came to narrowing down to my selected article, I used the following criteria: published within five years, peer-reviewed, and published in the USA. When I generated that criteria, the number of articles decreased and I was able to choose my article based on what I wanted to know about IBS.
Present within your post a summary of the credible article you chose as your resource.
The article I chose discusses the pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and evidence-based medicine related to IBS. According to this article, IBS is a syndrome that affects the gastrointestinal system causing a person to have constipation and diarrhea. The article describes how IBS could be related to infection and immune system activation, serotonin dysregulation, bacterial overgrowth, central dysregulation and brain-gut interaction, and genetics. When diagnosing this syndrome, it is diagnosed based on the patient's word of how they are feeling (clinical manifestations). The article discusses that IBS is usually treated by eliminating stressors and foods that may trigger IBS symptoms. It talks about ways to modify their diet and how to manage IBS. "Newer medications are beginning to focus on the molecular level like serotonin receptors agonists and antagonists and drugs that act locally on chloride channels (Lubiprostone) and guanylate cyclase receptors (linaclotide) in the gastrointestinal tract" (Saha, L., 2014). The article discusses how the different symptoms (bloating, constipation, diarrhea, etc.) can be treated and how different medications can effect the symptoms.
How do you know your article choice is credible?
I know that this article is credible because it has an author, a date, sources, and the domain is ".gov" which is known as a credible source.
Which database do you prefer and why?
I like using Google Scholar more because there are several different choices to choose from. When using PubMed you get the articles published by them, but when using Google Scholar, there are articles available from several different journals.
How will using a database search facilitate your
• scholarly work;
• nursing work (evidence-based practice); and
• personal self-development?
Using a database search will facilitate my scholarly work because it will show me what a truly credible source looks like. This will help me when I try to find articles/journals without the database. Using a database search will also help me when writing scholarly work because all the information I used in my writing is true and can be backed up with research unlike using Wikipedia where anyone can edit the information found on those pages. Using database search will help me with my nursing work when I search up information about a specific topic and I am able to share my findings with other nurses, patients, friends, etc. Being able to back myself up with studies and articles when discussing topics makes me more credible. It also improves my nursing work because I am able to practice based on what has been found in the studies I have researched. Database search use facilitates my personal self-development because I am able to learn all about certain topics that will enhance my education, helping me grow as a student/future nurse.
