And explain how this Essential will be used to improve quality in your future professional nursing career.
ANSWER
The AACN BSN essential that I selected is Essential II: Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Care and Patient Safety. This essential I think encompasses all the things needed to further a career nursing, separate from bedside nursing. It is all about high quality patient care, where leadership is needed; along with ethical and critical decision, this essential includes utilizing other disciplines in patient care to provide high quality care. Included in this essential is the emphasis on quality must include safety. Safety is a huge part of being a nurse and providing care. A baccalaureate nurse will have the ability to act as a leader and be able to delegate tasks to provide safe and effective patient care (AACN, 2008).
A journal written by Davis et al, stated that “Knowledge and skills in leadership, quality improvement, and patient safety are necessary to provide high-quality health care.” (Davis,2011) I think this essential holds a great meaning to being a better baccalaureate nurse.

Erin,
I agree with you that Essential II: Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Care and Patient Safety is important to further our careers. To be a good leader you have to know how to manage the people around you effectively and respectable. According to AACN “leadership skills are needed that emphasize ethical and critical decisionmaking, initiating and maintaining effective working relationships, using mutually respectful communication and collaboration within interprofessional teams, care coordination, delegation, and developing conflict resolution strategies” (AACN, 2018).

For this discussion I have chosen Essential VI: Interprofessional communication and collaboration for improving patient health outcomes (AACN, 2008). I chose this because I think that it’s a very important concept that is needed for caring for patients at the bedside and dealing with all other aspects that are required as functioning as a professional nurse. I think that this will improve my quality in my career in the future because allow me to be better prepared when it comes to communicating with other members of the healthcare team and the patient and family. According to Hood we must be prepared to collaborate with the other healthcare professionals and clients so that we can improve the quality of health care. I know that this skill is essential being that good communication can sometimes differentiate between a patient having a good outcome or a bad outcome, so I know that it will make a great impact in my future career.

Riana,
As you mentioned communication and collaboration can be the difference in the quality of care of our patients and this also applies to team members. Communication and collaboration affects every aspect of our professional careers. On a daily basis nurse have to communicate and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team. We need to obtain these skills as “health professions are challenged to educate future clinicians to deliver patientcentered care as members of an interprofessional team, emphasizing communication, evidencebased practice, quality improvement approaches, and informatics” (AACN, 2018).
