A baby that has been born during the duration of 20 to 37 weeks of gestation are considered
preterm newborns and require a little bit more assessment and attention versus babies that are
born full-term. They require extra observation and assistant due to the simple fact that they are
not full developed or have certain vital organs that have not developed properly due to the fact
they were born sooner than later. Similar to almost every human being, the cardiac and
respiratory systems are going to be the very first most important organs to be monitored prior to
and upon delivery. When babies are born prior to the 37 weeks of gestation, they typically are
transferred and cared for on an NICU unit. They are monitored, cared for, assessed and not
released until they observe the baby to be able to receive oral feedings, maintains a healthy and
consistent body temperature and weight a minimum of 4.4 pounds.

Personal protective equipment is essential when assisting with the care of all patients; especially
patients that are immunocompromised (cancer, HIV, etc.), along with the younger and older
populations because they are more prone to infection(s). Upon the arrival of a newborn, it may
be required to obtain samples from the baby including but not limited to blood and/or any other
bodily fluids. During these procedures to rule out and/or confirm any suspicions, the healthcare
team related to the baby need to be sure to take all and every measure to ensure the baby is
protected throughout the various of tests upon delivery.
