Informatics Midterm
*ANA Definition of Nursing Informatics
• Specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science and information science to
... [Show More] manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice
• Supports consumers, patients, nurses, and other providers in their decision making in all roles and settings
• My note: we are getting our science and nursing put together so we can make wiser decisions.
Our main goal is a better patient outcome? Which includes what three things?
• Advocate and teach patients while using the information.
• Technical skills- how to use an IV pump (not taking blood pressure)
• Interpersonal skills- how you deal and interact with patients, like diverse population, assess their culture, families, and surroundings, how they cope with what's going on. Ex. Some people take pain very differently. In indian you have to suck up the pain, where as here we get a scratch and want a bandaid. Know the culture.
• Cognitive skills- What are you learning, your knowledge, patho skills, if their bp is 120/40 what does that mean.
*2 Different types of informatics?
• Health informatics- Any one can use it and the data is valid (CDC is an example, it is evidence based and proven). The public can access it.
• Medical informatics- system that we use to improve pts health in the hospital. (Connect care is an example, graphing pt care so we can treat them better)
Knowledge needs for nurses?
Who are the two components?
• Nurses rely on an extensive amount of clinical information and specialized knowledge in order to evaluate the processes they have implemented and measure the corresponding outcomes
• Workers
> Work with information and generating information and knowledge as a product
> EX. Post-op patient. Turn, cough and deep breathe
• Users
> Individuals or groups who benefit from valuable, viable knowledge
> Synthesize information in critical thinking.(Evidence based practice)
