Lesson Type:
Vocabulary
Lesson Topic:
Jobs
Lesson Aims:
By the end of the lesson, students will be better able to recognise and identify the meaning, pronunciation, and form of ten new words related to jobs.
Target vocabulary: (1) actor, (2) doctor, (3) driver, (4) teacher, (5)
musician, (6) shop assistant, (7) cleaner, (8) nurse, (9) farmer, and
(10) mechanic.
Mode: PPP method Lesson Outcomes:
By the end of the lesson, students will have the ability to demonstrate new vocabulary using the ten words of the target vocabulary. This will have been achieved by:
1. Presentation - Correctly identified the meaning, punctuation and form of the new words which will be introduced using flashcards, videos, questions-and-answer, and repetition.
2. Practice - Correctly used the new words by matching the ten jobs to the correct words and by filling in the gaps of question-and-answer worksheets.
3. Production – Demonstrated the new language by discussing the positive and negative aspects of each job.
Anticipated difficulties:
1. Students may be confused with the feminine and masculine forms of some jobs (e.g., actor and actress).
2. Students may struggle with the phonology of some of the vocabulary, particularly differentiating the pronunciation of “c” in the word musician, teacher, mechanic and cleaner.
3. Students may have difficulty understanding the meaning of each job. Suggested solutions:
1. Provide brief insight during the introduction of the topic of jobs that there are certain jobs that have feminine and masculine forms. Demonstrate through imagery in a PowerPoint presentation or posters of the feminine and masculine forms of different jobs.
2. Explain the difference between a hard and soft “c” and demonstrate the multiple phonics depending on where the “c” is in a word. Explain that “c” may be pronounced differently when the letter “h” is combined and reiterate that some words require everyday practice.
3. Present flashcards through a PowerPoint presentation to illustrate the meaning of each job.
