Why you have chosen this syllabus
I chose this to structure my lessons based on Alberto’s desires, needs and interests. It is designed to build his vocabulary and understanding on applying the rules of grammar when reading, writing and speaking. It not only gives him the skill of listening for gist but it enhances the speed of grasping the information that he perceives when listening and responding.
Why you have chosen the topics covered
The topics are based on his interests and I had to find a way to use these topics to teach the skills needed for him to grow his English knowledge. Using the topics will get his attention because it’s something that he is familiar with only with a touch of English.
WHY YOU HAVE CHOSEN THIS TARGET LANGUAGE/SKILL
He has goals like getting a job, communicating with friends; watching movies. In order to understand and speak English you need to have a foundation. To do this you should be able to pronounce properly so that others can understand you and not get confused. If you going to make conversation- you need to have a vocabulary to start a topic to talk about. Last, your grammar is important as you can communicate clearly with written language.
Hour 1
Speaking and listening-The lesson involves first getting to know Alberto. Finding out what motivates him, what are his strengths and weaknesses; What level is he on… I also feel that he has to get comfortable around me- so that I can gain his trust and he could open up more easily and just find it easy to be himself. I figured due to his interview with Anna. Travel is something I picked up is one of his hobbies so I thought…Okay we’ll start there.
Hour 2
Reading and Pronunciation -Vocabulary
In order to speak you need to know something- a topic to start a conversation. Having a limited vocabulary limits you to what you can speak about. Some I chose to expand his vocabulary and to focus on his pronunciation of the words. That way people can understand him when he speaks. This way his reading can improve and his ability to speak fluently.
Hour 3
Speaking and listening-
I knew that pronunciation was a problem but I noticed that he was a bit slow when grasping the idea when someone was speaking and he asked that it be repeated. So Improving his listening skills was something that needed to be done. So even though he doesn’t entirely understand every word being said- he needs to know at least what the point of the idea is.
Hour 4
Verbs is something we use most of the time. Mainly it is the main verb and Modal verb. I thought that if he knew verbs- it would help a lot because it helps you build sentences. The more you use verbs the more advanced you grammatical skills is. However I split it into main verb and modal verb. These 2 verbs work together in building your sentences and it assists you with the tenses. Thus it could give him a great advantage into becoming fluent. It also gives him an opportunity to express the things he likes doing and he can speak more clearly about his culture back in Spain.
Hour 5
Job interview
Practicing on job interviewing is to help him gain confidence and to make him less nervous if a real job interview should occur. This is to practice him on his communicative skills and to see where he is still struggling and that I can assist him.
• Overall this lesson was structured getting a bit more challenging to build within Alberto a foundation. That he knows the basics and can grasp what is being said.
HOW THE COURSE WILL MEET THE LEARNER’S NEEDS
Since he lacked in vocabulary and struggled with pronunciation as well as listening- I structured the lesson based on what will improve his weaknesses. Expanding his vocabulary, improving his listening skills; pronunciation and assisting him with his grammar. This strengthens his English foundation- and will make it much easier for him to read and communicating with others. [Show Less]
