The first thing that a nurse should do is to identify the students who had suspected head lice then assess for the presence of lice infection. This is to determine how serious the infestations. And in this investigation, students, teachers and the principal are involved, wherein students are the patients for the assessment and the teachers and principal will help in identifying the students with suspected head lice. Moreover, families/parents are also involved in the investigation in order to ask for a consent in assessing their children also, they can provide information if they suspect that they have found lice.
B. What kind of data should the nurse obtain during the first part of the investigation?
• Number of children/students with head lice
• Subjective data regarding lice infections such as extreme itchiness on the scalp.
• Objective data such as small bugs on the scalp, small red bumps or sore on the scalp, neck or shoulders. Etc.

Provide information to the parents about head lice management and treatment such as applying pediculicide shampoo or head lice removal shampoo, comb hair with nit comb.
