EVIDENCE- BASED RESEARCH INTERVIEW 2
Evidence-Based Research Interview
In an interview with Christen Strong, MSN, RN, ONC, nurse manager of the Oncology
Unit at University of California Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, California, the following
topics were reviewed: the changes which that the health care leader is involved in implementing
evidence based practice. How strongly did the manager feel the research on the topic was? Have
they ever rejected research findings? Include any concerns they have had or resistance they have
experienced when implementing changes based on research. This paper will discuss, analyze,
and identify the components that comprise of the implemenation of a valid evidence-based
research.
Evidence-Base Practice
The Evidenece Based Practice was first presented in the published literature in 1991. In
the years of 1996, the most well cited Evidence Based Practice article defined evidence practice
medicine as the practical, precise, and explicit use of the best practice in making decisions about
the individualized care of patients. Additional, Evidence Based Practice is known as a systematic
method to obtain a solution to a clinical problem allowing implementation of the best available
research practices with patient standards and medical expertise. Finally, the characterisation of
evidence based practice emphasizes on the three fundamental principles outlining best clinical
practices: organized summaries of the best evidence, a schematic plan for determining what
constitutes the best medical practices and the able to take into account every patient preferences
and value. To appreciate the importance of evidence based practice, one can reflect on the
traditional methods of medical practice before evidence based practice medicine (Kamath &
Guyat, 2016).

EVIDENCE- BASED RESEARCH INTERVIEW 3
UC Davis Medical Center is apart of an academically renowned health care system. UC
Davis is where teaching, research, and clinical practices, and research is amalgamated for the
advancement health care. Although UC Davis Medical Center is an academically medical center
and evidence-based practice is welcomed here and is an emphasis of the Oncology Nursing
Society, changing the culture of the unit and getting staff to adapt to the new eveidence based
practice can be challenging. When implementing a new evidence-based practice, we have to take
into account the new graduate nurses who do not have any experience with evidence-based
practice and the senior nurses have experience with evidence-based practice and have an
established nursing practice. Due to having nurses on many different levels, this creates a
knowledge gap and hindrance when implementing a new evidence-based practice. Some of the
barriers seen are the resistence to change, the time contraint of learning a new practice and
knowledge deficits. As a nurse manager, it is my job to provide the educational tools and
resouces to implement those changes ( C.Strong, personal communication, November 19, 2016).
Evidence- Based Practice is essential to any health care system who have organizational
strategic goals such as the identification of nurse- patient sensitive outcomes. An organizational
approach to promoting nurses to utilization evidence-based practice is most desirable to any
health care wanting to implement growth within the medical practice. An advanced practice [Show Less]
