Everyday Math - Grade 6 - Unit 1
range - ANS-The "difference" between the greatest ("maximum") and the least ("minimum") numbers in a
set of data. Used
... [Show More] as a measure of "spread" (not a measure of center).
mode - ANS-The value or values that occur the "most often" in a set of data. There may be none, one, or
more modes in a data set. Mode is a measure of center.
maximum - ANS-The largest amount; the greatest number in a set of data.
minimum - ANS-The smallest amount; the smallest number in a set of data.
median - ANS-The "middle" value in a set of numbers that are listed in order from smallest to greatest. If
there is an even data set of numbers, the median is the middle of the two middle numbers. Median is a
measure of center.
bar graph - ANS-A graph that uses horizontal or vertical bars to display data.
dot plot - ANS-A sketch of data in which dots above a labeled number line to show frequency of each value.
landmark - ANS-A notable feature of a data set; includes median, mode, maximum, minimum, and range.
mean - ANS-The sum of the numbers in a set of data divided by the number of pieces of data; often called
"the average". Mean is a measure of center.
outlier - ANS-A value much greater or much less than the others in a data set. An extreme outlier can have
a negative impact on the mean as a measure of center.
key - ANS-Shows the meaning of the numbers graph or distances map. Helps the reader interpret the
information.
histogram - ANS-a graph using "touching" bars to show frequencies of the data. The columns should be
touching with no gaps (unless no data in that range).
survey - ANS-A study that collects data. Surveys are commonly used to study demographics such as
people's characteristics, behaviors, interests, and opinions.
measure of center - ANS-A measure used as an indicator of the "center" of the data. Types of measures of
center include: mean, median, mode.
Statistical question - ANS-A question that needs a variety of information to answer.
Coordinates - ANS-Ordered pairs that identify points on a coordinate plane. (x,y)
quadrant - ANS-one of four sections on a coordinate plane
bin - ANS-An interval for organizing data on a graph.
