Ethics - ANS-Emphasizes morality, justice, honesty, right vs worng and free will
Principle of good conduct or a body of right principles and specific moral choices.
The study of moral choices that conform to professional standards of conduct
Autonomy - ANS-Requires that the wishes of competent individuals must be honored
Beneficence - ANS-A moral obligation of health care providers to act for the benefit of
others
Confidentiality - ANS-The holding of professional secrets or discussions. Keeping client
information within appropriate limits
Duty - ANS-The obligations that individuals have to others in society
Fidelity - ANS-Related to confidentiality and is defined as the moral duty to keep
commitments that have been promised
Justice - ANS-The quality of being just and fair; righteousness
Nonmaleficence - ANS-The obligation of health care providers to above all else, do no
harm
Paternalism - ANS-A term used when someone fails to recognize another individual's
rights and autonomy
Rights - ANS-The ability to take advantage of a moral entitlement to do something or
not to do something
Veracity - ANS-Obligation of health care providers to tell the truth

APTA Guide for conduct of the PTA (Professional conduct) - ANS-Intended to serve
PTAs in interpreting the Standards of Ethical Conduct for the PTA (standards) of the
APTA.
Guide provides a framework by which PTA may determine the propriety of their
conduct. It is also intended to guide the development of PTA students. Standards and
Guide apply to all PTA's
Advise of the Ethics and Judicial Committee (EJC) Intended to assist a PTA in applying
general ethical standards to specific situations. (Guide)
Standard 1 (Display of Respect)
Respect - ANS-1A. PTA shall act in a respectful manner towards each person
regardless of age, gender, race, nationality, religion, ethnicity, social or economic
status, sexual orientation, health condition or disability.

Altruism - ANS-2A. PTA shall act in the best interest of pt.s/clients over the interest of
the PTA
Ex: Seeing late pt. at the end of the day
Standard 3C - Sound Decisions
Standard 3E - Supervision - ANS-3C. PTA shall make decisions based upon their level
of competence and consistent w/ pt/client values
Ex: scope of work and level of competence
3E: PTA shall provide PT services under the direction and supervision of a PT and shall
communicate w/ the PT when pt/client status requires modifications to the established
plan of care
