Sheltered Instruction - is an ESL approach in which students develop knowledge in
content areas thru English their L2 / Certified ESL full-time teacher
Content Based ESL - a model for ESL teaching that integrates language and content
instruction in the ESL classroom, integrated with subject matter instruction, using L2 to
learn science, math, social studies, etc.
Structured Immersion - all students in the program are ELLs and receive instruction in
English with no native language support (L1)
Pull-Out ESL - serves only students identified as ELLs by providing an ESL certified
part-time teacher who provides English Language Arts (ELA) in a pull-out delivery while
they remain in the mainstream classroom for other subjects/ content (math, science,
etc.)
Self-Contained ESL Class - an ESL elementary class with only ELLs, their ESL teacher
teaches all subjects, no pull-out
Cognitive and Academic Language Learning Approach (Calla) - focuses on academic
skills, supported by cognitive theories of Cummins or Piaget, helps transfer concepts
and skills from L1 to L2
CALLA is used for... - ELLs that have developed BICS (social skills in English)
or developed CALP (cognitive academic lang.) levels in their primary language and
need assistance in transferring concepts and skills to L2
