The very moment that changed my life forever was the very moment that brought my
... [Show More] family closer together. It was a warm spring day in the month of May. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, there was a slight breeze in the air that carried the beautiful scent of lilies from my grandmothers most prized garden. The best things about my grandmother was that she could grow anything out of thin air and the fact that she lived three houses down from me. I loved the fact that I could see her everyday as I took my daily walk.
This particular day was just like any normal day as I walked over to my grandmother’s house, it was quite odd as I did not see her tending to her front garden, but I just figured that she was in the house getting more supplies. I walked up to the house and called for her and did not get an answer. This was not like her because she could not drive in her old age and rarely left the house. I called again and rang the bell and no answer, as I began to walk around the deck that wrapped around her house, I noticed a shadow on the floor through her dainty lace curtains. I rushed to the back door and it was unlocked, as I came in there she was, on the floor looking so small and helpless. My heart sank and my head began to feel like it was on fire as the blood rushed to my head. I ran to her side and shook her and called her name relentlessly to no avail. I ran to the phone and called an ambulance. That moment felt like it took hours when in reality it was only five minutes. I called my mother and she ran over to get me and we climbed into the car and followed the ambulance to the hospital.
The drive to the hospital was the longest in my entire life, and it seemed like very red light was lit just to pause us. When we got to the hospital and walked into the room the doctors told me, “sorry for your loss, we did everything we could.” I could not explain the emotions that went through my body as I stood there in shock, I was so frozen I could not even cry. After some time passed my mom took me home to prepare to make arrangements. I don’t know why but as I got out the car, I could no longer smell the lilies through the breeze, it was like the world knew she was gone.
At the funeral al of the family showed up, even family that I had not seen in years even though they lived in the same city. We all shared the same emotion of sadness; she was the cement that held our family together. We all cried together and encouraged each other. Those who had grudges broke them and anger was thrown away, fences were mended, it was through this disaster that goodness was brought about, as our family was reunited. Some of my aunts took it harder than ever as they had not seen things eye to eye with my grandmother, but at that moment they began to miss her presence and realized how much she met to them. Soon after came the burial and we went home to try to put the broken pieces of all our hearts together. Even though the death of my grandmother took all of us by surprise, whatever happened after that was good for our family. It was then that I realized that there is no safer place than family and it was through tragedy that our family was reunited. What I wouldn’t give to have my grandmother again, but I know every time I feel a warm breeze on my cheek and smell the soft fragrance of lilies, she is with me. [Show Less]
