Question 3 (a): Family Members Perspectives
I will now provide a brief description of the story as seen from the perspective of each of the Roger’s family members.
Cathy Rogers (eldest daughter of three)
Cathy Rogers grew up in what appears to be an unstable home environment. She has two younger siblings; however she only gets along with the youngest sister, who is six-years-old and over whom Cathy is very protective. Cathy despises her fifteen-year-old sister, Lindy.
Cathy seems to receive little to no support from either her mother or her father and although Cathy excelled in school without any assistance from anyone, she feels that she was not acknowledged or praised and that no one cared because they were too preoccupied with their own lives and with protecting Lindy, who struggled at school. Cathy feels that Lindy is favoured.
Cathy’s mother is open about her regret of having Cathy at such a young age and that she does not see Cathy as her real daughter. Her mother shows her no affection, and this is hurtful to Cathy and experienced as rejection. When Cathy was a child she idolised her father, but they no longer have a relationship as he is always working.
During stressful times, such as with Cathy’s university studies, she has very few people that she can consider a support system. She has a good relationship with her grandmother, however she only sees her gran once a year during the December holidays. Cathy’s boyfriend is the only person who is directly supportive and with whom she has regular contact. She has recently made new friends at university and they may be a potential source for support in the future.
