(B) Rationale or justification (pp. 376-377)
• The purpose of this study is to expand research on Africa American students’ in majority white universities (p. 376).
• The is a gap in the research that recognizes racial tensions on campus for African Americans (p. 376)
(C) Theoretical framework (p. 376)
Relational Dialectics Theory (p. 376).
(D) Hypothesis/hypotheses and/or Research questions, or Thesis statement (p. 379)
RQ1: “How, if at all, do African American students experience internal intra-individual dialectical tension within the university setting?” (p. 379).
RQ2: “How, if at all, do African American students experience external intergroup dialectical tension with the university setting?” (p. 379).
(E) Methods (pp. 379-380)
• Qualitative
• The study was designed with 6 focus groups, two at each university and 28 individual interviews (p. 379).
• The data was analyzed using the constant comparative method of analysis (p. 380).
(F) Research participants, texts, or contexts (p. 379)
• 6 focus groups with a total of 39 African American Students
Sp 2013
• 19 males and 20 females participated in the focus groups
• 28 African Americans participated in the individual interviews
• 14 males and 14 females conducted individual interviews
• 67 total participants were involved in the study
(G) Results/Findings (pp. 382-387)
RQ1: The researchers found in both the focus groups and interviews that three intra-individual dialectical tensions aroused that expressed internal tensions; Blackness/whiteness, talking/silence, and past/future (pp. 382-384).
RQ2: The researchers found that the African American students highlighted two main external dialectics between the majority white students and the minority African American students. The two intergroup dialectical tensions are integration/segregation and revelation/ concealment (pp. 384-387)
(H) Limitations and Directions For Future Research (pp. 389-390)
The findings only represent the relationship from a single angle perspective, the African American side. With the limitation on a single perspective, this causes a constraint of the study (p. 389).
Future research should address this study as a relational partner to uncover perspective based dialectic tensions (p. 390).
