Think about all of the cultural identities that make you the unique individual you are. Make a list of all the identities that are you are most and least aware. To help you with this task, draw a circle on paper. Draw a “slice” in the circle that represents your awareness of each identity. For the cultural identities that you are most aware, section off a larger slice. For the identities that you do not think about daily, give them a smaller slice. In the end, your pie might look something like the following example:
Identities you might consider include race, gender, ethnicity, sexual identity, disability status, physical appearance, citizenship, nationality, religion or spirituality affiliation, socio-economic status or any cultural groups to which you belong.
You do not need to share your identity pie with the group (although you may if you’d like), but please share the outcomes of this activity by responding to the following questions.
1. Which of your cultural identity(ies) are you more aware of, and why do you think you are more aware of them?
2. Which of your cultural identity(ies) are you least aware of and why is that the case?
3. How does this exercise relate to your understanding of social privilege?
4. How might awareness of your cultural identities make you be a better ally?
