EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The main aim of the experiment was to study the response of subjecting a two tank interacting
system to a step and impulse change respectively. The output response for step and impulse
change were recorded as shown in appendix A. Response vs Time curves were plotted for the
same to compare and calculate different parameters of the experiment. The resistance R3 and
R2 and the time constant τ 3 and τ 2 for tank 3 and 2 subjected to a step change as
calculated were 15.21 and 12.35 sec/ cm
2
and 1011.04 seconds and 821.16 seconds
respectively. Furthermore, the resistance R3 and R2 and the time constant τ 3 and τ 2
for tank 3 and 2 subjected to an impulse change as calculated were 1.44 and 1.12 sec/ cm
2
and
96.28 seconds and 74.65 seconds respectively. From the experiment performed it was concluded
that the transport lag increases, as we increase the number of tanks in series. It was further
concluded that in order to maintain a steady state in two tank system the liquid level in tank 1
should be always greater than that of tank 2. Finally, in order to obtain better results it is
recommended to check the sensitivity of the rotameter prior to the commencement of
experiment. It is also recommended that the input changes (step or impulse) should be
instantaneous so as to reduce the chances of any further discrepancies. [Show Less]
