1. What is the Christian view of the nature of human persons, and which theory of moral status is it compatible with? How is this related to the intrinsic human value and dignity?
2. Which theory or theories are being used by Jessica, Marco, Maria, and Dr. Wilson to determine the moral status of the fetus? What from the case study specifically leads you to believe that they hold the theory you selected?
3. How does the theory determine or influence each of their recommendations for action? 4. What theory do you agree with? Why? How would that theory determine or influence the
recommendation for action?
Ideally, the Christian worldview asserts that human beings are a certain type of creatures created by God and that they have both physical and spiritual capacity to connect with God their creator. It is from this that here has been developed an intrinsically-valuable moral status theory which integrates worthiness, respect, and dignity because they are created in “the image of God.” From that, diverse opinions are then developed with regard to views relating to human person as the focus is on the distinctiveness in Christian views on the value of human beings. Furthermore, from the case study presented, the couple is faced with a hard decision of whether to terminate the fetus or keep it. From the ultrasound results, it indicated that there is a 25% that the fetus will be born without hands and Down syndrome. Dr. Wilson suggests that the fetus should be aborted due to such abnormality. Jessica is entirely indecisive whether to continue with the pregnancy or keep it while her husband, Marco is ready to support the decision she makes while Aunty Maria strongly believes that abortion is not best option. In this case study of fetal abnormality involves four individuals: Jessica who’s pregnant, Marco her husband, Aunt Maria; Jessica aunt and Dr. Wilson. Each individual will present their case about aborting the fetus. According to the given situation, Jessica a religious individual founds out she’s pregnant and this may have not been a good time, given that Jessica and Marco just saved up enough money to finally move out of Aunt Maria’s house to get a place of their own. Not to mention, both of them work long hours at their job with the goal of economic security and success. Nevertheless, four months later they seek care at a county hospital. A preliminary ultrasound reveals that Jessica’s child has a “25%” chance out of 100 that her child will have Down syndrome. In addition, further scans reveal that the fetus has a rare condition in which it has not developed any arms and will not likely develop them later on. Dr. [Show Less]
