burnout in the areas of acute medicine and emergency care. This study is also trying to show a
correlation between nurse burnout and its effects on nurses and the care that they are providing.
Burnout is a true problems today and many variables contribute to this issue. Many nurses are
working in conditions where there is inadequate staffing, utilization of hallway beds, mandatory
overtime, shortages of mid-level providers and physicians, and an overall increase of in patient
volumes. Taking all of those factors and combining that into a single work day are some of the
reasons that burnout in the nursing profession is at an all-time high. There have been many
studies concerning various levels of burnout and its effects on nursing and employers.
The profession of emergency nursing is physically and emotionally demanding. Complex
patient loads, long shifts, demanding physicians, a fast-paced environment, and working in an
emotionally and physically challenging area can cause stress for emergency department (ED)
nurses (Hunskater et al.,2015). The term compassion fatigue was first introduced by in 1992. It is
described CF as nurses losing their ability to nurture. CF has been defined as the negative
consequences of working with a significant number of traumatized individuals in combination
with a strong, personal, empathic orientation (Hunskater et al.,2015). In this particular study
cross-sectional study used a nonexperimental, descriptive, and predictive design. The target
population for this study was registered nurses (RNs) who worked in EDs throughout the United
States with at least one year of experience (Hunskater et al.,2015). A total of 1,000 surveys were
mailed to ED nurses nationwide, 284 were returned, representing a 28% response rate
