Some aspects of my organization’s formal performance evaluation process are effective. At the beginning of each year each employee is required to submit what is called “Goals” for the new year ahead. This information is typed into the Goals & Accomplishments section on the intranet in Performance Development. The employee matches some of their goals to the business and organizational goals. Performance appraisals are important for organizations because they reflect the effectiveness and efficiency of achieving organizational goals and objectives (Youssef, 2012). Once the employee matches their goals with business and organizational goals; the person can then submit what their personal goals are such as improving education, or successfully performing all aspect of their position. I believe that these sections are good for the business since the organization can get some information on the potential career path that the employee plans to take. My current manager asked me during my performance appraisal, “What do I plan to do after I complete my degree?” This information may be useful to her in the near future. These questions force the employee to look at him or herself in the mirror (Jackson, 2012). HR’s role in the performance evaluation is similar to that in the article; HR will send out several emails reminding managers to complete their evaluation, HR gives them a deadline to complete them. Lastly, I would like to see more recognition for doing the work of 3 people, this is my current situation. We lost people in 2008, they were never replaced and I have to perform their duties. It’s important to remember that something structural has happened to the job market since 2008 financial crisis, most industries have drastically cut headcount (Jackson, 2012).
