The website that I chose to look at was The Federal Trade Commission. As stated on the site their mission is to “To prevent business practices that are anticompetitive, deceptive, or unfair to consumers.” The informationthat is available through the site deals with complaints about unfair practices that business may be engaged in, for example scams, false advertisements, and monopolistic practices. The site includes news and alerts, consumerprotection and anti-trust information. The FTC also reviewsmarket mergers to ensure that the mergers of said companies are not hurtful to the market or consumers. The FTC does not havethe power to enforce their rules, but, they can and will go through the court system to gain assistance to enforce their rules and regulations. The FTC worksalongside the government as an independent agency. There is a division of the FTC called BCP that concentrates its efforts on protecting the consumer. They haveseven subdivisions to protect the consumer. They are: Advertising Practices, Consumer and Business Education, Enforcement, Financial Practices, Marketing Practices, Planning & Information and Privacy and IdentityProtection. They have8 regional offices to investigate any complaints and/or possible issues. They provide information on the past activities of companies, which will help consumers find reputable companies who offer the services they need.
