BSC 2346 Module 06 Lab Worksheet: Skeletal System, Skeletal Muscle, Joint Dissection- Review.Introduction
This week’s lab will focus on the continued
... [Show More] study of the gross anatomy and
identification of fetal pig skeletal muscles and joint dissection of various synovial
joints.
Objectives
Objectives for this week’s lab include: 1) Demonstrate knowledge and
understanding of specimen dissection, 2) Review the identification of gross anatomy
of bones and their boney landmarks, 3) Review the identification of specific muscles
of the fetal pig and Homo sapiens (humans), 4) Review the joint dissection of
various synovial joints within the pig.
Overview
This week’s lab content will consist of reviewing the content from module 01
through module 05 in preparation of the mid-term. The laboratory midterm will
consist of 50 multiple-choice questions that will encompass the material and
concepts covered in:
Module 01- genetic traits, human pedigree analysis
Module 02- identify anatomical structures from skin
Module 03- identification of the bones listed in “Appendix A”
Module 04- identification of the muscles listed in “Appendix B”
Module 05- identification of the muscles listed in “Appendix C” along with the
anatomical structures from the joint dissection
It is recommended that you take this lab time to review the anatomy of the skeletal
system (including joints) and the muscular system. On your lab mid-term and final,
you will have to identify pictures of dissected and separated muscles on the pig
specimen and human cadaver pictures of skeletal muscles.
The appendixes at the end of this laboratory worksheet are guides to help you
review the material. They are replicas of the appendixes found at the end of Modules
03, 04 and 05 lab worksheets.
This week’s Pre-Lab Questions will be review concepts of the material covered in
Modules 01 – 05. This week’s Post-Lab questions will refer to the Module 06 lecture
content of the nervous tissue and nervous system organization.
Materials
Anatomical models of the integumentary system, skeletal system, joints and
muscular system
Articulated and disarticulated skeletal system models
Fetal pig specimens
Dissection kits and trays
Pre-Lab Evaluation Questions
The pre-lab evaluation questions must be answered prior to lab and demonstrated
to your lab instructor. You must read through the assigned chapter readings, lab
introduction, objectives, overview and procedure to answer these questions.
Please cite your work for any reference source you utilize in answering these
questions.
1. In the anatomical position of a human:
a. What are the two forearm bones? Make sure you list which one is
medial and lateral.
Radius is lateral and line to the thumb.
Ulna is medial line to the pinky.
b. What is the proper terminology for the “heel bone”? For the “collar
bone”?
Heel bone is calcaneus.
Collar bone is clavicle.
c. Describe the bones and bony landmarks that compose the hip joint?
Hip joint compose of head of femur in the acetabulum of hip bone.
2. In the anatomical position of a human:
a. What is the posterior arm muscle that assists in extension of the
elbow? [Show Less]
