BIOS 242 Week 1 Discussion 1 – Koch s Postulates
Discussion 1:
As a skilled microbiologist, you have been called to Farmer McDonald's farm to
... [Show More] investigate an outbreak of sores on the udders of his cows. Your first task is to determine whether the causative agent of the sores is a microbe. Explain how you will you use Koch's postulates to accomplish this.
ANSWER
Procedure:
1. Determine whether the causative agent in our case microbe, is present in all cases of the disease.
2. We isolate the causative agent from the diseased cows and then grown in pure culture.
3. We introduce the causative agent from the pure culture into a healthy, susceptible laboratory cow.
4. The causative agent is then re-isolated from the new host and closely compared with the originally inoculated causative agent.
Applying it:
1. By examining a sample from each cow, we can come up with a conclusion as to whether the causative agent is present in all of them or not.
2. The causative agent is allowed to grow so that when it will be introduced into a new host, its effects will be visible over a period of time.
3. We introduce the causative agent from the pure culture into a healthy, susceptible laboratory cow. The causative agent must cause the disease when inoculated into the healthy, susceptible laboratory cow.
4. If there exist distinct similarities then we can conclude that the causative agent is microbe.

As you read in Chapter 1 describe the six groups of microorganisms and give an example of each. We will focus on these six throughout the course.

Q.)
We will focus on Louis Pasteur this session as he has been referred to as the Father of Microbiology. What is spontaneous generation and describe Pasteur's experiment that argued against this theory?

I hope that the scientific method is a review for each of you. It is vital to understand this process as you use it in your everyday life and in order for experiments to be valid, they must follow the scientific method!
Check out Power Point Presentation located under the Modules and then under Course Resources. Describe steps of the scientific method for us. Give us an example of how you applied this method today?
