Neuro diagnostic & procedure
- Cerebral Angiogram
o Preprocedural
Assess for allergies to iodine
... [Show More] (shellfish)
Assess kidney function
Take off jewelry
Refrain from eating or drinking 4-6 hours prior to test
Instruct patient sedation is given before and during procedure
Instruct client to void before the procedure
Instruct the client on what side effects occur with dye
Metallic taste, warm sensation over face, jaw, tongue, lip and
behind ears
o Postprocedural
Inspect insertion site and distal extremities for pedal pulses, color and
warmth
- Electroencephalography (EEG)
o Assess electrical activity of the brain
o Preprocedural
Wash hair before procedure
Sleep deprivation is better for this procedure
Patient does not need to be NPO
Avoid stimulants 12-24 hours before procedure
o During procedure
Takes 1 hour
Flashing lights may be used
Patient may be asked to hyperventilate
Increases electrical activity in the brain
o Postprocedural
Normal activity can resume
Glass coma scale (GCS)
Assess LOC
<8 indicates severe TBI
9-12 indicates moderate TBI
> 13 indicates minor TBI
- Intracranial pressure monitoring (ICP)
o Monitor device is inserted into the cranial cavity that records pressure
Risk for infection
o GCS score
< 8 patients are candidates for ICP monitoring
1o Irritability is early sign of ICP
Restlessness, HA, decreases LOC, pupil abnormality, abnormal breathing
(Cheyne stokes, hyperventilation, apnea), abnormal posturing (decorticate
and decerebrate)
o Normal ICP range
10-15mm hg
>15 indicates abnormally high ICP
- Lumbar puncture (spinal tap)
o Sample of CSF fluid to diagnose
Syphilis, MS, meningitis and infection
o Preprocedural
Have patient void before procedure
Position patient on one side in cannonball or stretch overbed table
o Postprocedural
Lay flat
Monitor for HA (CSF leakage)
Give pain medication & increase fluids
If HA persist use Epidural blood patch to seal the hole in the dura
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
o Assess for allergies to iodine if contrast is used
Shellfish
o Assess kidney function
o Assess for Closter phobia
o Have patient remove all jewelry
o Ask patient if any metal implants are placed
Pacemaker, Ortho joint, artificial heart valve, IUD and aneurysm clip
o Give patient ear plugs (MRI is loud) [Show Less]
