Activity 1
What is Kindness??
It is always interesting to read about what school children around the world do to show
kindness to others. Read this text.
Students knit with love at Westwood Elementary in Texas At a primary school in Texas there
is a knitting club called the Bales Knitting Club. This club has been going for fifteen years.
Currently, there are seventy or more learners who belong to this club. They meet every
Tuesday morning during the term to knit bookmarks, scarves, blankets, and baby hats.
Volunteers from the community, as well as mentors from other grades, assist the club by
teaching the members the knit stitch, unknotting unruly yarn, and encouraging the learners to
keep going. They are taught that one stitch at a time turns rows into finished products that
bring joy to others. The club has knitted thousands of baby hats which they took to local
hospitals and have even sent to Columbia, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, India, and Africa through
the 8Save the Children9 organisation. Their knitted bookmarks and blankets go to
local nursing home residents.

Kindness is a choice
Once there was a girl called Anathi. She had a younger sister called sister called Buhle.
Anathi was a well-behaved girl, but Buhle, was a selfish girl.
One day in May, their parents took them to a beautiful park where there were many
kinds of pretty flowers. There were roses, sunflowers, lavender, waterlilies,
chrysanthemums, tulips and many more flowers. While their parents had tea in the
restaurant with some friends, Anathi and Buhle walked around the lovely park.
