With the formative assessment of the one minute paper, the students can take control of what they have learned, and they can express what they have learned in their own words. The students will process the information based on their previous knowledge and experience. They are also able to identify any areas of confusion or misunderstandings directly to the instructor. The one minute paper also allows the instructor to evaluate the overall understanding of the class and to ensure that the student’s learning needs are being met. The instructor can use the one-minute paper feedback to help the instructor guide the students through the learning process.
The summative performance assessment is also centered on the constructivist learning theory. Active learning is the main focus of the constructivist theory and encourages student-centered instruction. Creating a care plan from the data students collected during their windshield survey allows the student to foster new learning based on that individual’s prior knowledge and encourages students to make clinical connections using what they already know. The creation of a care plan is active based learning where the student has to take control of their learning. It is also a “real world” learning opportunity where the students are practicing real-world skills in a controlled and safe environment (Jenson & Frederick, 2016).
The constructivism theory influenced the summative objective assessment. The objective assessment is a mix of ten multiple-choice and true/false questions. The basis of the objective assessment is to have the students based their learning from the information they already know. The students should be able to make connections between what they already know and the test and encourage them to use critical thinking to apply that knowledge to answer the test questions.
