1. Who was Mohammed? When did he live? What did he believe? What kind of changes did he hope to make in Arab society?
Mohammed was a merchant. He was the founder of the religion of Islam. He lived in 570-632. He has born in 570CE in the Arabian city of Mecca. He believes “God is one”
He changed religions on the Arabic society.
2. What were the religious beliefs among the Arab tribes prior to Mohammed’s time? Why was Mecca an important religious center both before and after Mohammed’s time?
Each Arab tribe believes their our gods.
Mecca was an important religious center before Mohammed’s time because Mohammed was born in Mecca. There are a lot of gods in the temple here. Mecca is the place people went to pray the god.
3. What events led to the conflict between Mecca and Medina? How was it resolved?
People forced Mohammed to live in Mecca.
A delegation from Medina, consisting of the representatives of the twelve important clans of Medina, invited Muhammad as a neutral outsider to serve as the chief arbitrator for the entire community. So Mohammed went to Medina. Then, people in Mecca attack him in Medina.
Mohammed’s army was very small, but they defeated people from Mecca. After that, Mohammed destroyed the statues of gods in Kabba (Qaaba).
Finally, Islam/Muslin people follow M’s religions.
4. After the rise of Islam, what was life like in the major Islamic city centers as compared to Europe?
It became very wealth, and powerful. There were many hospitals, universities, and scientific centers.
Have lots of books.
Europa at that time was a little bit behind.
5. What were some of the key cities that developed in the Islamic regions during the middle Ages? Where was the “House of Wisdom?” What was it known for?
Baghdad (Capital of Iraq); Cordoba (in Spain)
The “House of Wisdom”: Baghdad. It was scientific center. It was a new city in new muslin city, which have a lot of money.
6. What were the Crusades? When did they occur? Why?
Crusades were European holy army. It occurs in 1099 AD. European tries to control Jerusalem. Crusades war between European and Muslin.
The leader of Christian Pope wants Christian to control the city.
Before that, the Muslin leader, Alhakin (he was considered as mental unstable), burn down one of church in Jerusalem.
7. What effects did the Crusades have on Christian Europe? What impact did they have on Islamic regions?
1) They found soap, spicy from Asia. They learned how to make paper. European took them back.
2) The impact was small. It bring to small regions.
8. What was the role and impact of trade during this time?
Trade was growing at that time. Checks, banks appeared.
Trade became more important than agriculture for many societies.
9. Who was Saladin (Salah-ad-Din Yusuf)? What was his policy towards non- Muslims?
Saladin was muslin. He takes Jerusalem back for Muslin.
Policy: He allowed non- Muslin to leave or stay at Jerusalem. He tolerates religions living in Jerusalem.
10. Who were the Mongols?
The Mongols become from central Asia. They built huge Empire to Europe. In 1258, they conquered Baghdad.
Mongols control the muslin. They are easy for people to ravel from China to Asia, Europe, and middle east. [Show Less]
