CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Sex Education is a curriculum-based approach to teaching and learning about the
cognitive, emotional, physical, and social elements of sexuality (UNESCO, 2018). Its goal
is to provide knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values to young people that will enable them
to achieve their health, well-being, and dignity. According to UNESCO, It aims to create
respectful social and sexual interactions within people, consider how their choices affect
their own and others' well-being, and ensure that their rights are protected throughout
their lives. The Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012 (R.A.
10354) paved the way for Integrated Sex Education to become a part of the public school
curriculum in the Philippines (Nichols, 2020). The objective of this Republic Act is to
provide universal access to Family Planning, Sexual Education, and maternal care for the
Filipinos.
Consequently, the lack of knowledge in Sexual Education in adolescents can lead
them to build uninformed decisions about relationships and sexuality. These unsafe
sexual behaviors may have significant unpleasant consequences on their health which
they may not be necessarily aware of. In addition, a lack of high-quality and appropriate
Sex Education may expose adolescents to some risky sexual practices and sexual
