I give permission for this interview both methods go recording are what we agreed on and I am aware I can stop this interview at any moment or if I chose not/feel uncomfortable to answer or move forward with the interview or any question I have the right to verbalize that to you.” I will begin now with the interview are you ready J.O. “yes I am Mrs. Lebron.
Me: The first category question is on nutrition: Please describe to me what you consider a recommended nutrition requirements to follow and knowledge of the daily requirements?
J.O.: “I feel the recommended nutrition should be high in lean protein meats, such as turkey, chicken and lean beef. Including your grain group like your brown rice, wheat, dairy like milk, eggs, yogurt. But I have to admit that vegetables especially greens are beneficial including your 8cups of water.”
Me: Which are your primary source of protein?
J.O.: “Like I mentioned early the lean protein is best such as turkey, chicken and lean beef.”
Me: Oh, yes you did mention that in the previous question can you think of any other proteins that are great primary sources.
J.O.: “I think beans are another great source of protein as well can’t think of any others for now.”
Me: I am wondering if you think that healthy nutrition plays an important role in our health and why?
J.O.: “Of course it does your body is like a car you must maintain it with oil changes and great gas and tune ups. Just like our bodies we need to give it the right healthy balance of foods and exercise to function well and stay healthy life style.”
Me: Great answer I think that’s the perfect way to describe the importance role of healthy nutrition.”
Me: Next category Health-Related beliefs and Practice the question is: Are you aware of the health disparities, precautions and knowledge of your community access to promotional programs?
J.O.: “Yes I am and as you know I’m a nurse so I definitely know a thing or two of this topic question. In my current community, the disease prevention whether sexual or secondary disease like hypertension or diabetes are over looked and not well maintained or thy not aware of them”. “I know we have plenty of free clinics, healthy community centers and fairs for the public to promote awareness.”
Me: That’s great J.O. Now let’s talk about your health belief model?
J.O.: “I feel that we can prevent a lot of disease with awareness and education on disease prevention. Such as condom use for safe sex, annual physicals with their primary doctors and nutrition consult for healthy eating.”
Me: Can you help me understand primary and secondary prevention methods?
J.O.: “Primary prevention is concerned with preventing the onset of disease; it aims to reduce the incidence of disease. It involves interventions that are applied before there is any evidence of disease or injury. Examples include protection against the effects of a disease agent, as with vaccination.” “Secondary prevention is concerned with detecting a disease in its earliest stages, before symptoms appear, and intervening to slow or stop its progression: "catch it early." The assumption is that earlier intervention will be more effective, and that the disease can be slowed or reversed. It includes the use of screening tests or other suitable procedures to detect serious disease as early as possible so that its progress can be arrested and, if possible, the disease eradicated.”
Me: Category 3: Educational Background question: Can you tell me about your highest educational level reached?
J.O.: “Yes, I’m currently enrolled in my BSN for my nursing at this present time.”
Me: Are you planning in furthering your education further after your BSN in nursing and why?
J.O.: “Yes I plan to get my MSN, maybe even NP I just love school and gaining so much knowledge on educating the public.”
Me: What values do the family members express regarding educational?
J.O.: “They feel it’s equally as important as I do because educator is key for knowledge and advancement in life.”
Me: Category 4: Religion and Spirituality question: What can you tell me about your religion beliefs and practices that involve how you approach your own health and of your patients in your community?
J.O.: “I am Hispanic from South America I love that we believe in natural remedies, treatment and CAM therapies used to treat.” “I feel you can’t judge others and their way of healing or curing illness you have to keep an open mind and be culturally competence to all cultures/beliefs.”
Me: Can you tell me a little about your health beliefs and practices during health and illness?
J.O.: “Sure we like to do natural remedies for colds like honey, lemon and teas. For hypertension, we use garlic and fish oil on daily.”
Me: Can you tell me more about any special rites or blessings for those with serious or terminal illnesses?
J.O.: “We call medicine man or woman of the village when someone is sick we don’t rely on doctors. I enjoy watching the rituals with all the natural herbs and leaves burning great thing to experience.”
Me: Category 5: Biocultural Variations and Cultural Aspects of the Incidence of Diseases question: Tell me are you aware of any health history associated with your family’s history or health disease that are more Hispanic cultural specific?
J.O.: “Yes completely aware of both in my family as well as in the Hispanic population. In my family, we have hypertension, diabetes and hyperlipidemia on both my mother’s side and fathers side of the family. I do know that Hispanics are more prone to be predisposed to diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases. I do believe a lot of these disease can be prevented with proper nutrition education and daily exercise.”
Me: Have you and/or family members relate a health history associated with genetic or acquired conditions that are more prevalent for a specific cultural group (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, sickle cell anemia, Tay–Sachs disease, G-6-PD deficiency, lactose intolerance)?
J.O.: “Both sides of my family mother and father with the hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular as well. It’s really hard to change a culture way of eating. Hispanics are known for eating fatty, greasy and plenty of carbs plus sugar in their daily diets. In my house hold food portions were served in large quantity and had it be completely finished if not you were punished and shamed. They don’t know any other way to be its hard to change them especially the elderly.”
Me: Can you tell me more about your family health history if any?
J.O.: “Well pretty much have covered all of it but I forget to mention that we do have breast cancer on my mother’s side. I have lost my aunt to breast cancer and I get my screenings since the age of 25 because of the fear of having the predispose.”
I wanted to take out the time to thank you so much J.O. in opening your home and your personal information including your family’s history with me on this interview. I really do appreciate you opening yourself to me and allowing me to share this information with my school. All your information will be properly handled I will forward all voice recordings and written reports to you and if you have some extra time now we may review in case you want to add or change something. All the information shared is a great outlook into the Hispanic population and gaining knowledge from the culture. This is important when doing transcultural nursing to have cultural competence and be successful in understanding and working with many cultures. There isn’t one way of doing thigs or looking at the situations you must make yourself aware of the diverse ways to dealing with health, nutrition and illness. Whether it be natural remedies, CAM therapies, medicine man/woman we have to respect each other’s views and work with each to reach an optimal goal of wellness. That the essential key to transcultural nursing being non-judgmental, empathic towards all cultures. J.O. is a nurse herself for a population of both Hispanic and African American she uses her culture knowledge and experience to optimize her patient care with her patients. [Show Less]
