... [Show More] citizens wonder what possesses the criminals to act as violently as they do and
commit the crimes they commit. While pondering these thoughts, the law abiding citizens are
also thinking about ways to prevent these heinous acts by identifying signs that indicate a certain
criminal action before it takes place. In 1993 Sheriff Joe Arpaio created the Tent City Jail. The
tent city jail utilizes old style military tents that are meant to be used for more than 10
individuals. The tent city jail is located right outside one of the Maricopa County Jails in
Phoenix, Arizona. Sheriff Joe Arpaio refused to grant any inmate early release on the account the
jail was becoming overcrowded. Sheriff Jow envisioned the Tent City Jail as means to house
additional criminals without the high cost of building a new facility while acting as a deterrent
against future criminals (MCSO, 2013). The majority of the inmates who served time in the tent
city jail have seen the error of their ways and do everything in their power to correct those errors
to stay out of jail. Each inmate is required to earn their meals by some means of work. Tax
paying citizens that abide by the law expect incarcerated criminals to pay for the crimes commit
as opposed to living a luxurious life of free food and plenty of reading time.
Many correctional facilities may appear to be supporting the criminals. It may appear that
they are being provided a bed, free meals, medical attention, and cable TV more than the
criminals ever had before becoming incarcerated. The offenders now have a roof to shelter them
from the weather with no mortgage, rent, or utilities to be paid. Many will wonder if the wrong
message is being sent. For a criminal who has nothing to lose he or she might actually gladly
