Prompt
This semester, we have read some of Ernest Hemingway’s most classic writings, all of which contribute to the course’s overarching theme: The Pe
... [Show More] rsonal Struggle. The characters we’ve come to know endure struggles that are realistic, touching, compelling, and represent the human condition. Whether their struggles are mental, physical, emotional, or a combination of those, we see great strength and fortitude in the way they push ahead despite their hardships. And no matter if Hemingway is writing in a dense abstract manner, or a simple straightforward style, we readers are always left interpreting the meaning of his work through his rich use of literary elements (such as symbolism, imagery, inferences, dialogue, and analysis).
Santiago, from The Old Man and The Sea in particular, is a unique character—he demonstrates tremendous fortitude in spite of the many odds stacked against him. His journey makes us question the purpose of one’s life, destiny, fate, heroism, and legacy, to name a few.
Task
You are writing a logically structured and well developed essay that discusses Santiago’s motivation for his treacherous experience, and the qualities he exhibits along the way.
