levodopa/carbidopa - Name the drugs in the Dopaminergic drug class
Dopaminergic - Levodopa/Carbidopa are in which drug class?
- high protein meals -
... [Show More] What can interfere with absorption of Levodopa?
- the goal is to improve the patient's ability to carry out ADLs/motor function.
- levodopa/carbidopa do not cure or delay its progression. - What is the goal of Dopaminergic (levodopa/carbidopa) drugs for Parkinson's disease?
N/V, constipation, orthostatic hypotension - What are the common side effects of Dopaminergic (levodopa/carbidopa) drugs?
- do not crush, do not take with food
- fiber and fluids (constipation)
- increase sodium and water (orthostatic hypotension)
- change positions slowly, fall precautions! (orthostatic hypotension)
- avoid high protein foods (on/off phenomenon)
- may take time for full therapeutic effect - What is the patient education of levodopa?
donepezil
*DON't forget things - Name the drug in the Cholinesterase Inhibitor drug class
1:26:00
Cholinesterase Inhibitors - Donepezil is in which drug class?
Mechanism of Action: it prevents an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase (AChE) from breaking down the neurotransmitter ACh. Thus, it increases the availability of ACh at the synapses, enhancing transmission by cholinergic neurons that have not yet been destroyed by Alzheimer's disease.
Goal of Treatment: it delays (not stops or cures!) cognitive decline (memory, thought, reasoning), and prolongs independent function. - What is the mechanism of action and goal of treatment for Cholinesterase Inhibitors (donepezil) on Alzheimer's Disease?
Cholinergic side effects (parasympathetic nervous system, rest/digest) because we have increased ACh:
headache
insomnia OR drowsiness
dizziness, fainting, falling
bradycardia, hypotension
bronchoconstriction (lung sounds will sound like wheezing [air trying to move through a restricted space])
GI: diarrhea, N/V, dyspepsia (indigestion) - What are the common side effects of Cholinesterase Inhibitor (donepezil) drugs ?
interferon beta - Name the drug in the Immunomodulators drug class
1:31:00
Immunomodulators - Interferon beta is in what drug class?
they are at risk for infection - What is our patient at risk for when they take interferon beta?
- flu-like symptoms*
- hepatotoxicity (adverse effect)
- injection site reaction
*patients will be prescribed a prn acetaminophen to help with achiness. - What are common side effects of interferon beta?
Patient education: monitor for s/s like jaundice, fatigue, visual disturbances, abdominal pain
Nursing interventions: monitor liver function tests (LFTs)*
*if there are no liver function tests ordered, call the MD and request them - Hepatotoxicity is an adverse effect of interferon beta.
What is the patient education?
What is the nursing intervention?
Injection site reactions:
- rotate injection sites
- ice before and after (for swelling)
- warm, moist compress after injection
- hydrocortisone cream or oral Benadryl (for itchiness)
- Tylenol (for fever, pain)
*is redness and swelling at the injection site considered an allergic reaction? No it is a known expected phenomenon, it's a "localized reaction." - What is the patient education for injection-site reactions that occur when taking interferon beta?
phenytoin (traditional)
oxcarbazepine (newer)
*phen came ph-irst (first) - Name the drugs in the Antiepileptic Agents drug class
