ANSWER
As stated in Hood (2018), nurses and other health care team members must work together to achieve the common goal of providing the best possible care for clients. Inter-professional collaboration is defined as "when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds work together with patients, families, carers (caregivers), and communities to deliver the highest quality of care” (Vega, Bernard, and Morris, 2017). According to Bosch and Mansell (2015), collaboration in health care has been shown to improve patient outcomes, such as reducing preventable adverse drug reactions, decreasing morbidity and mortality rates, and optimizing medication dosages. Bosch and Mansell (2015) list six key elements necessary for success in a collaborative team. These six elements include:
1). Role clarity- successful teams are teams where each individual team member is relied upon to execute his or her unique role.
2). Trust- building and maintaining trust amongst team members. Being comfortable with the skill set and experience of key team members. “Building trust is not instantaneous; rather, it is something that builds with time. If teams have the opportunity to work together frequently, the development of confidence within the team is naturally facilitated” (Bosch and Mansell, 2015).
3). Confidence- Each team member must have confidence in their own skills as well as confidence in the skills of the other team members.
4). The ability to overcome adversity. Adversity and challenges occur quite frequently in providing for the health care needs of other. Inter-professional collaboration becomes even more important during these difficult times. Hicks et al (2019)) describes this as resilience.
5). The ability to overcome personal differences- Every team member is not going to be on the same page one hundred percent of the time. There will be times when team members must respectfully agree to disagree.
6). Collective leadership- involves dispersing leadership roles amongst the team. This way not any one team member is saddled with the sole responsibility of being the leader. Collective leadership encourages “buy-in” from all members of the team. Individuals feel more empowered and this is how confidence and self-esteem is built.
In addition, effective communication across the health care team is essential for inter-professional collaboration to occur. Presence, empathy, respect, and genuineness are all principles of communication that facilitate successful collaboration (Hood, 2018). Beginning clinicians should be immersed in inter-professional education early on in their curriculum's. Freeth, Hammick, Koppel, et al, (2005) define inter-professional education as interactive educational activities involving two or more professions that foster collaboration to Improve patient care. Inter-professional education optimizes opportunities for the development of respect and trust for other members of the healthcare team.
