NR 283 Unit 1 Discussion Topic – Radiation Therapy
Assuming you are the nurse caring for a patient scheduled for radiation therapy, what are some
... [Show More] nursing implications to consider prior to and after treatment?
Answer
The implications to consider would be me more dependent on the location on the body the radiation is focused as this is where the cells are the most vulnerable. An example of this would be if a patient had a breast cancer and was having radiation therapy in this area, they would need to be advised to avoid "bras with underwires, nylon, or lace. Instead, recommend a breathable cotton bra or camisole" (Ruppert, 2011). Tell patients they may use deodorant but should avoid shaving the armpits to prevent skin irritation which could make them susceptible to infection.
There are general things to holistically consider for patients that are undergoing radiology therapy such as taking care of the body, mind, soul and family. Caring for the body, a patient should get enough rest (as the process of destroying the cells and cell regrew will make the patient fatigued), eating a healthy diet (even when radiation typically makes a patient loose the desire to eat), taking care of the patient's skin to ensure it is clean (patients are more prone to infections during radiation treatments). Educating the patient on proper hygiene and sanitation concerns. As the radiation is actively killing cells, a patient is more susceptible to infection and a weak immune system so they should ensure them and the others around them have good hand hygiene to reduce the risk. Caring for the patient emotionally as they might feel depressed, afraid, angry, frustrated, alone, or helpless. Suggest the patient might get involved with a support group and meet other people with cancer as this will help them emotionally.
