Sentinel City is a large metropolitan area that consists of four neighborhoods, Nightingale Square, Acer Tech Center, Casper Park District and Industrial Heights. The total population of the city is 663, 862 people, most of which are between the ages of 18-65, followed by children under 18 and finally persons over 65 years of age. The city is primarily Caucasian with 80.6% of people identifying as such. The remaining 19.4 % of the city is comprised of 10.4% African Americans, 3.7% Asian Americans, 2% American Indians, 0.2% Hawaiian Americans and 3.1% of the population reports being biracial. The median household income of Sentinel City is $49, 091 and 18.9% of residents live below the poverty level. As mentioned previously Sentinel City can further be broken down into four separate neighborhoods (Sentinel City, 2018).
Nightingale Square has a population of 103,974 with a median household income of $269,550 and a 0.7% uninsured resident rate. Acer Tech Center has a population of 168,390 with a median household income of $166,300 and a 1.5% uninsured resident rate. Casper Park District has a population of 352,643 with a median household income of $80,134 and a 22.7% uninsured resident rate. Lastly, Industrial Heights has a population of 38,855 with a median household income of $24,672 and a 37.5% uninsured resident rate (Sentinel City, 2018).
Neighborhood/Safety Assessment
During the neighborhood safety assessment there were various safety hazards noted. Multiple neighborhoods in Sentinel City had improperly disposed of trash or piles of trash along the sides of buildings, stray animals, rats and graffiti. The neighborhood in which the most safety concerns were noted was Industrial Heights. The area of Industrial Heights had old graffitied buildings in disrepair, dirty and poorly maintained streets and gutters, trash piled up with stray animals and rats seen wandering the sidewalks and an active crime seen with a burning vehicle.
Various types of crimes are committed in Sentinel City requiring police involvement. The most frequent arrests, in order of prevalence, are related to cannabis, warrants, battery, controlled substances, trespassing, reckless conduct and public intoxication. Drug use in Sentinel City consists mostly of tobacco and alcohol consumption with 24% and 26% of residents using each, respectively. As far as illegal substances are concerned the most commonly used are cannabis (12%), heroin (7%) and cocaine (5%). Gang violence is a concern within the city and accounted for 100 incidences of aggravated assault, 40 robberies, 38 simple assaults and 20 homicides in 2017. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) response times vary depending on the service in question and are 6.33 minutes for assistance from the fire department, 7.46 minutes for basic life support and 7.54 minutes for advanced life support (Sentinel City, 2018).
Windshield Survey
Sentinel City is an urban environment where the housing and commercial buildings appear to be of varying ages, with the newest and most well-kept buildings seen in Nightingale Square. The majority of the buildings are attached structures made of brick and no solar panels or windmills are present. There are signs of building disrepair in the Industrial Heights and Casper Park neighborhoods as evidenced by graffiti and broken windows. The buildings are close together with not much open space around them or throughout the city for that matter.
Open space in the city is limited and there is one park. There is minimal foliage scattered throughout the city and no houses appear to have yards. The neighborhoods are designated with signs and the boundaries are also apparent due to differences in amenities and housing. For example, the neighborhood of Nightingale Square offers a tennis, a grocery store and new condominiums compared to Industrial Heights’ soup kitchen and old housing projects. There are various other amenities and hangouts seen throughout Sentinel. Examples include the school yard, restaurants (i.e. Italian cuisine, Lilly’s, donut shop, sushi), markets (i.e. Joe’s Grocery, Bodega Market and Deli, food stands), coffee shops, fine art gallery, book store and a park.
Residents use numerous means of transportation to travel throughout the city. People walk, bike, drive private vehicles and ride the bus. The roads are in fair condition throughout most of the city with issues noted mainly in Industrial Heights and Casper Park. There are many services offered throughout the city such as a gas station, senior center, hospital, dental office, park and recreation center and Interfaith Church. There are numerous billboards in Sentinel City addressing public safety and community health topics like abstaining from texting while driving and promoting smoking cessation. The city even has it’s ow radio station, Buzz 96.5. [Show Less]
