Operations management gives mangers a way of thinking about operations that can helps them design, manage and improve the organization’s operations in an orderly fashion. It encompasses planning, sourcing and purchasing, inventory management, production management, marketing, sales, distribution, supply chain management, quality management, management information systems, and more. For example, my agency manufactures components for helicopters, many of the operations management choices involve the hiring and training of workers, the purchase of mechanics tools and other specialized equipment, the purchasing of different types of metal and rubber material, and the location and layout of the maintenance areas. If the directors and program manager makes the appropriate operations decisions, it will enable our agency to be able to deliver the highest quality products on time at the lowest possible cost and earn a profit.

Total quality management is an organizations effort to put up a permanent climate which they use to improve the ability to offer high quality products and services to its clients. Total quality management relies heavily on previous tools and techniques of quality control. It is a management system dealing with customer focus and makes use of all employees of a company to enhance improvement continuity. It makes use of strategies, data and effective communications in order to integrate quality discipline into the company’s culture and activities. It’s characterized by the following aspects:
• Customer focused-the client determines the level of quality. Even when the company performs employee training, computer software upgrades or purchase of new measuring tools, the customer is the one who will determine whether the efforts are worthwhile.
• All employees are involved in attainment of the company’s goals.
• It focuses on process thinking. The process entails the steps that takes supplies and transforms them outputs that are delivered to customers.
• It is an integrated system that consists of different specialties and departments
• Uses strategic and systematic approach in achieving the company’s vision, mission and goals and in the formulation of a strategic plan.
• Aims at continual improvement which drives the company to be analytical and creative in finding ways to be more competitive and effective in their operations.
