I believe the discussion the students and teacher were having was meaningful. The teacher was asking guiding questions and making sure to use academic language purposefully. She was consistent with using terms such as ‘observations’ ‘statements’ and ‘conclusions’ which helped ensure the students were responding with appropriate academic language. The objective of the lesson was to understand how force and motion worked. Through discussion it appears that the use of academic language helped students to grasp the objectives of the lesson.

If I were the teacher of this classroom conducting this lesson, I would have grouped the students up. Then I would give them the chance to work together to create a poster board that explained what the outcomes of the activity they all had. I would ask them to make sure to note differences between each other results. After some time allowed for group work, we would come back together as a class and groups would be allowed to report out. This would allow each student to share their results and allow other students to ask questions and evaluate each other’s discussion and work – the second highest level of Bloom’s Taxonomy. This will encourage higher order thinking.
