A pattern that I saw in the videos regarding classroom environment and management strategies was that the teachers were able to use student-guided centers and/or groups. In Video 0034, the teacher had the students set up in different groups throughout the classroom. The teacher displays such great classroom management because this class is a preschool class and they work independently without her in the groups except when she visited to ask questions. They knew the rules before going into the groups and did a remarkable job following the rules at this young age. A boy named Julius was running and she said, “Julius don’t run please.” He stopped running right away and she kept working with the group in the doctor station. This was the only time that she had to stop misbehavior during the entire video. The students were smiling and on task the whole time. In video 0150, the teacher had amazing control of her classroom. Students started to get loud and were moving around at one point of the video. She responded to the behavior by saying in a calm voice, “Class, class, class.” The students stopped the misbehaviors immediately and replied, “Yes, yes, yes” in reply to her. Once she regained their attention, she gave them new directions without missing a beat. She sang a certain song to transition students from one task to another and they knew exactly what to do. During a small group sharing time, she used a listening stone. The person holding the stone was the only one who was allowed to speak and everyone else had to listen. The students had total control of this classroom and when the students got off track, she pulled them right back in without changing her tone or emotions. She used small groups to discuss what was the same between the students and people from China. [Show Less]
